Redrow Homes

Oct 5, 2022 | New Builds

Redrow Homes have a number of new build developments in the Scott Jenkins Water Softeners area of operation.

A mixture of 2,3 or 4-bedroom homes are available – nicely appointed, but all short of one key ingredient – a water softener!

Which is surprising, given that this part of the south-east is such a hard water area.   As one of the most experienced and customer-focussed soft water system specialists in the south east of England, we are ideally placed to provide new homeowners with a new water softener – from day one. The advantages this provides to Redrow homeowners are far reaching, as you’ll discover if you read on …..

As a new property homeowner, your new water softener will be VAT exempt

It’s worth knowing that, if you are about to move into a brand new Redrow home – you could be in line for an immediate 20% saving on a new water softener.

Can’t be bad, can it!

So why is this? Well, as long as the property has yet to be signed off, if you decide to have a water softener installed before that happens, the price of the water softener will be exempt from VAT, or zero rated.

The reason for this is that water softeners are classed as white goods, which are all eligible for VAT exemption on new build properties.

Moving into a pristine new property is always a time of great excitement. So why not take full advantage and go for a high quality, energy saving water softener at the same time.

Claiming your 20% VAT exemption

If you have a water softener fitted in your brand-new home before you move in, you are entitled to claim a VAT refund.  To be eligible, you must apply to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) within 3 months of the work being completed.

To ensure the installation is zero-rated for VAT, it must take place during the construction stage of the project or be very closely related to it. This is known as work done ‘in the course of construction’.

You won’t be able to claim zero-rate VAT on the water softener installation after the new build is finished.

If you aren’t sure how to claim back your 20% VAT exemption, don’t worry. We can help you with all the paperwork.

Why is water so hard in Sussex, Hampshire and Surrey?

Throughout much of the south-east – especially in coastal regions – living with hard water is a way of life. It’s not because of the type of rain we receive – rainwater is naturally soft. The reason why water becomes hard is down to the soil beneath our feet.

The counties of West and East Sussex, Hampshire and Surrey sit on predominantly chalky or limestone soil. This contains an abundance of calcium and magnesium minerals. Anytime rainfall seeps into the underlay, the calcium and magnesium components have the effect of changing the water from soft to hard. That’s nature for you!

Water hardness levels vary throughout the region. However, they can typically be in excess of 250 parts per million (ppm) virtually everywhere – and often much higher. On the water hardness scale, any reading above 200ppm is considered hard and 300ppm is exceptionally hard. With a water softener in your home, that reading will come down to virtually zero.

Here’s why water softeners improve your lifestyle

For homeowners who aren’t keen on having constant hard water flowing through their taps, the best advice is to have a water softener installed. The benefits will be immediate! Our skin and hair adore soft water! Softened water ensures they remain naturally shiny and vibrant looking. Hard water simply washes the living daylight out of everything. That’s why laundry will always feel much softer to the touch if you have soft water flowing the pipework.

And when it comes to cleaning, water softeners will do much of the hard work for you! That’s because hard water is the main cause of limescale – a nightmare to face around the home. Water softeners, however, stop the build-up of scale in its tracks, preventing it from accumulating in household appliances, like washing machines, dishwashers and kettles. Cleaning kitchens and bathrooms is also much more straightforward – less elbow grease and cost savings – because surfaces stay shiny for longer and use up less detergents in the process.

A water softener will also help reduce your energy bills

If you are moving into a brand-new home, you’ll not only have lovely soft  iwater from the moment you take possession of the keys – you’ll also be saving money straightaway. That’s because the water softener will protect your new central heating system from limescale accumulation in the pipework. Hard water causing scale will, over time, clog up and seriously downgrade the boiler and dramatically shorten its lifespan. They are mighty expensive to replace!

No hard water in the system means central heating systems and household appliances will much more efficiently for far, far longer. That means you’ll also benefit from big savings on those dreaded fuel bills. Since your central heating system won’t be impeded with limescale, it won’t have to work so hard to pump out the correct amount of heat and hot water – ensuring your hard-earned money will go a lot further.

And it will all be thanks to that water softener you had the good sense to have installed in your new Redrow home!
