There is a lot of confusion as to whether you can soften water that feeds your boiler.
Above is a cut out of a heat exchanger damaged by limescale. FACT.
A heat exchanger gets clogged up with limescale and fails resulting in a replacement. This will not happen with soft water, in fact the opposite. Soft water will dissolve the build up of limescale bringing your appliances back to their original state.
In 2012 it was decided that over the lifetime of a modern central heating system, filling with base-exchange softened hard mains water would appear to present no significantly greater risk of corrosion of system metals than filling with hard mains water.
In my opinion there is nothing more damaging than hard water to your central heating system and appliances not to mention the scale that is visible around the home.
